Mass vaccinations for 5-11 year olds

HOWARD COUNTY’S MASS VACCINATION CLINIC

WILL PROVIDE PFIZER COVID VACCINE FOR 5-11 YEAR OLDS

The Howard County Health Department will begin offering Covid-19 vaccination appointments for Hoosier children aged 5-11 at their one-stop shop mass vaccination clinic beginning Tuesday, November 9, 2021.  Appointments can be scheduled by visiting www.ourshot.in.gov or by calling 211 or (866)211-9966.

Appointments and pre-registration are strongly recommended to help minimize wait times and ensure that sufficient vaccine is available for pediatric patients.  We will make every effort to accommodate walk-ins but will reserve vaccine for and serve those with appointments first.

“Children can get sick from COVID-19 and spread the virus to others, even if they don’t have symptoms. Most children with COVID-19 have mild symptoms or have no symptoms at all. However, some children can get severely ill from COVID-19. They might require hospitalization, intensive care, or a ventilator to help them breath. In rare cases, they might die. Experts are also investigating a rare but serious medical condition associated with COVID-19 in children called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). The National Institutes of Health estimate that 11-15% of children infected with COVID-19 develop long-term symptoms.” – Indiana Department of Health

“The studies on the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children 5-11 showed the vaccine to be safe, effective, and well-tolerated. Getting kids vaccinated not only protects them but also those around them who may be more vulnerable.” – Emily Backer, MD – Howard County Health Officer

Pfizer vaccine is the only Covid-19 vaccine authorized for used in individuals under 18 years of age.  Children ages 5-11 will receive a lower, pediatric-specific dose.  When scheduling an appointment for children in this age group, be sure to choose a location designated by a pin on the map at www.ourshot.in.gov.  Supplies of pediatric vaccine will be limited initially as shipments are being staggered.  Additional sites will be added as vaccine arrives.

A parent or guardian must provide consent for the vaccine during the online registration process, and children under 16 must be accompanied to the vaccination appointment by an adult.

This site will continue to operate as a one-stop shop for all COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are all available, including initial doses, additional doses, and booster doses for eligible populations, which now include children and adults as young as age 5 years. Regular dose flu vaccine is available for individuals under 65 years old and high dose flu vaccine is available for individuals 65 years and older.

How: Register online by visiting ourshot.in.gov or call 211 (866-211-9966) and a representative will schedule an appointment for you. Appointments are preferred, although walk-ins are accepted.

If you’ve been fully vaccinated:

  • You can gather indoors with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart.
  • You can gather indoors with unvaccinated people of any age from one other household (for example, visiting with relatives who all live together) without masks or staying 6 feet apart, unless any of those people or anyone they live with has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
  • If you’ve been around someone who has COVID-19, you do not need to quarantine; however, you should get tested 5-7 days after your exposure, even if you don’t have symptoms. You should wear a mask while in public for 14 days post-exposure or until you receive a negative test result.

Once you’re fully vaccinated, you should still:

  • Wear a mask and socially distance when in public or visiting an unvaccinated person at increased risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19
  • Avoid medium- or large-sized gatherings
  • Protect yourself while traveling and follow posted mask requirements
  • Get tested and stay home if symptoms develop
