Ben’s Entertainment Blog: Why I Stopped Wearing my Captain America Stuff

Avengers Endgame is officially here and no worries, I won’t spoil the movie for you. You may have seen my posts on social media about me putting away the Captain America shield, the shirts, the costumes… all of it. You might be asking “why would you do this!?” Well that’s what this blog is going to be all about!

Back in 2011 when Captain America: The First Avenger came into theaters, a friend of mine told me that I reminded her of him. I had the hair swoop just like Chris Evans, I too am a short guy (though Captain America got some super serum that fixed that for him… waiting on my dose) and I always try my best to do what’s right. Around that same time I bought a Captain America belt buckle at a heroes convention as kind of a funny way to say that I agreed with my friend and that I was Steve Rogers.

Have you ever had an outfit or piece of clothing that no matter where or when you wore it you got a compliment? That was my Captain America belt buckle. I started wearing it everywhere and it became the thing that I was known for. I was the “Captain America Belt Buckle Guy!” Catchy super hero name don’t you agree?

From then on for every holiday gift I was given a Captain America t-shirt. I currently own almost 10 Captain America shirts and I can honestly tell you that I only purchased one of them. I have been gifted all sorts of Captain America memorabilia including pins, patches and action figures. So over time I started to embrace it. About four or five years ago I even dressed as Captain America. Then I did it again  the next year… and again after that etc. I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth. Plus shortly after I moved to Kokomo I purchased a Captain America shield backpack and that has been a big hit especially with kids.

So why give it all up? Well over the years my Captain America gear has really gotten worn down. Despite his shield being “unbreakable,” that does not translate to merchandise. My shirts have holes in them from so many wears. My belt buckle has lost so much paint you can barely tell it’s a captain america shield. Plus my backpack has a giant crack along the bottom. The funny thing is though, that’s not even the reason I’m putting it all away. Broken things can be fixed or replaced. I’ve put the Captain America life behind me because Chris Evans, confirmed months ago after shooting Avengers End Game, that this would be his final time playing the character. His contract was up and he decided to move on to something new. So it’s time for me to do the same! I can’t be Captain America if I don’t look like him anymore right?

What will my next awesome backpack be? No clue. Still weighing options and taking requests on that. So if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments!
