Ben’s Entertainment Blog: Captain Marvel Review

The long awaited Captain Marvel has arrived! Plus we’re just over a month away from Avengers: Endgame! Spring is one of my favorite times of year just because of how many great movies are coming out. There’s also Us, Dumbo, Shazam, Pet Semetary, Hellboy, Detective Pikachu, John Wick 3 and Aladdin! What a time to be alive!

Before we dive into Captain Marvel, let me break down how this going to work. If you have not seen Captain Marvel yet, you can read this paragraph (and the previous paragraph obviously) but do not go any further! Spoilers ahead after this paragraph! You have been warned. So Captain Marvel is a really solid marvel movie that does a lot of things really well. It breaks the mold of what Marvel movies have found themselves stuck in for almost a decade. So many Marvel movies have been basically the exact same concept. Normal human becomes super, they struggle with their powers, but then uh oh there’s an evil version of them that has the exact same power and they’re slightly stronger than the hero until the very end when they somehow manage to overcome the bad guy’s strength. Most Marvel movies in a nutshell. Don’t believe me? Watch The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man or Black Panther. Captain Marvel shifts that paradigm for a new way of story telling an origin story in a fun and funny way. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend it.

Here come the spoilers. The twist in this movie is what really pushed it over the edge in a great way for me. The aliens that she has been fighting the whole time actually being good and just trying to run away from Captain Marvel’s people was a huge surprise to me. I mean I knew something shady was going on as soon as Ronan from Guardians of the galaxy showed up, but prior to that I had no clue. Also, fun fact. The stunt double for the old lady in the train fight scene is the sister of the stunt double for Captain Marvel. How cool is that?!

Goose the cat is who stole the show for me. The joke of it being some sort of incredibly powerful being was absolutely hilarious. Like the reading on the alien ship of it being a threat level high was hilarious. I honestly thought that it wasn’t going to be anything other than an ordinary cat. Once it opened its mouth and those alien tentacles popped out I just died laughing.

The only somewhat negative critics I can give to the movie overall is that it does feel a little bit forced in terms of fan service. Bringing back our favorite agents of shield was great, but why hasn’t Fury mentioned Captain Marvel until now?

For the most part though, great movie overall and is definitely enough to tide us over until Endgame comes out. Any predictions for what you think is going to happen? I’m thinking that they’re going to introduce some sort of new Avengers team from this. Since Iron Man and Captain America are both done after this movie, they’re obviously not going to let this cash cow die. Plus there’s going to have to be some sort of time reversal or something to be able to reverse what happened in infinity war. I’m super stoked! Let me know your predictions in the comments below, and tell me what you thought of Captain Marvel!
