Ben’s Entertainment Blog: The Umbrella Academy

When you finish off a show that you’ve been watching for a while, it can feel like you’ve lost a friend. The gang of laughable characters that you’ve been enjoying every week is no more, and now there is a hole in your life that needs filling. This was me recently after finishing the Punisher Season 2 (which to be honest, I was a little disappointed with).

I saw a promo for the Umbrella Academy on Netflix and it looked pretty intriguing so I figured I would give it a shot. This… Show… Is… Weird. It’s about a group of 7 people who were all adopted by this wealthy billionaire. Each of these kids were born out of a strange phenomenon that happened on the same day. Women all around the world would all of the sudden out of nowhere have babies and they weren’t even pregnant 10 minutes ago. Each of the children born were granted with super natural abilities. Some with pretty standard powers like super strength or teleportation, but others with very uniquely strange powers like telling a rumor that instantly becomes true.

What sounds like a pretty ordinary super hero type show is revealed to be something completely different once you get a few episodes in. One of the seven finds out that the world is going to end in 8 days and has no idea how to stop it. There’s no bad guy to beat up. No machine to shut down. How do you stop something that you don’t know how, where or why it’s going to happen. All you know is when.

I’m only a few episodes into the first season, but I’m pretty into it so far. I always feel like the ending is the most accurate indicator of how good a show is, so I can’t quite give it my stamp of approval just yet. But the first four episodes are pretty cool!
