Ben’s Entertainment Blog: New Years Resolutions and Anti Resolutions!

It’s a New Year and a new you! Do you try to do a New Years resolution to better yourself in the new year? Or should you try a different approach this year? Studies have shown that the reason why many resolutions fail is because we tend to be too broad with our objectives. Experts say that if we want to be more successful we should do something more goal oriented. For example instead of saying “I want to go to the gym more this year” or “I want to eat healthier,” try to make it fit into a goal you would like to accomplish.

I have always been somewhat healthy. I go to the gym semi-regularly and I do light to moderately intense work outs. I want to step it up a notch this year. My New Years resolution is to run a 5k in under 30 minutes. So I’ll need to run each mile in between 8 and 9 minutes to be able to accomplish this goal. I didn’t wait until the new year to start training for this, I’ve actually been running for a couple of months. When I started I finished my mile at around 12 and a half minutes. Way slower than I would like to be if I want to compete in a 5k. Yesterday I ran and I clocked in at exactly a 10 minute mile. Not bad! I’m getting there! Statistically speaking, knowing that I have that goal in mind I’m much more likely to accomplish it this year.

But let’s be honest… New Years resolutions aren’t really all that fun, plus they take a lot of work. You know what is fun though? Anti Resolutions. An anti resolution is knowing that what you’re doing is a bad habit or a guilty pleasure but continuing to do it anyway because you enjoy it. Like having a drink from time to time or binge watching a tv show. I encourage you to have an anti resolution this year. That way you can feel accomplished and have way more fun doing it. So if you love a show on Netflix, take a day and just watch it nonstop. Make it an event! Buy popcorn and candy, then invite friends over!

No matter what you decide to do, don’t forget to take pictures, journal or do something to make sure that you remember what you accomplished. People tend to get bogged down with all of the negativity in the world today. They end up saying, “2018 was the worst year of all time!” And maybe it was the worst year of all time for you. If that’s the case I’m sorry to hear that! Either way, taking time to remember all of the things you accomplish and all of the positive things that happen is a great way to make 2019 your best year yet!
