Ben’s Entertainment Blog: Avatar the Last Airbender

It’s hard to find a show that’s good for the whole family. Most kids shows are, lets be honest boring to adults. Many adult shows may not be appropriate for kids. So where is the middle ground? Avatar: The Last Airbender is perfect for the whole family.

Currently the number one most watched show on Netflix, Avatar: The Last Airbender has a little bit of something for everyone. There’s comedy, action, drama, and just an incredibly written story that is so well thought-out from beginning to end. So what’s the show about? Katara explains it best right from the intro:

Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang, and although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.

Aang is the last of his kind and has the weight of the world on his shoulders by being the Avatar, the bridge between our world and the spirit world. This doesn’t stop him from being a lighthearted and goofy character. Zuko, the banished prince of the fire-lord, is on the hunt for the Avatar. If he can capture him, he can restore his honor and reclaim his place beside his family on the thrown. Zuko is incredibly troubled, and despite being one of the show’s antagonists, at times you find yourself rooting for him, and hope he can find himself in this world.

It’s characters like Aang and Zuko that make this show incredible, and even though it ended over a decade ago, the animation still holds up amazingly well. If you haven’t seen this show yet, it’s up on Netflix and is absolutely worth a watch with your whole family. Plus each episode is only like 23 minutes so what do you have to lose? Here’s the extended intro from episode one to give you a pretty good idea of the premise of the show. Check it out! Have you seen it already? What did you think of the show?
