Furry Fridays! Where to take your dogs for fun!

Hello everyone and happy Furry Friday to you! We are so excited that the weather seems to be breaking a little big and Spring is on the way! Positive thoughts, positive thoughts! Well with the nicer weather on the way, that means we can finally get outside with our animals again! Our animals love fresh air just as much as we do! And fortunately Kokomo has some great places that you can go with your furry friends! Karen from the Kokomo Humane Society had a few suggestions!

Note From The Director

Now that the weather is finally thinking about getting nice it is time to venture out again with the dogs! I have been a hermit most of the winter and while my dogs tend to be couch potatoes when the weather is cold they are really beginning to reek of cabin fever. The reality is there are several place you can bring your dogs to get them out of the house even when you don’t want to be outside. Rural King is one that most people know about, they are super dog friendly and you can get some of your own shopping done while you are there. It is a great way to socialize a new or old dog and I know that mine love to go there mainly because there is so much to smell! There are lots of different scents and if they are lucky they will find a stray piece of popcorn here or there. Petco, PetSmart and Pet Valu are all also pet friendly and if you go to Pet Valu for $10 you can give your dog a bath in their self-serve dog bathing area. There are not many dog friendly restaurants in Kokomo which is a shame, even the patio areas are restricted so make sure to ask before you get excited about having lunch with your dog outside. One definitely dog friendly spot is the Tin Man. Dogs are allowed inside and out on their patio. While they don’t serve food you can order pizza from Oscars or Mexican food from Three Amigos and have it delivered. The dogs love the Tin Man and while there are often multiple dogs there at once they all seem to get along.

Outside space is much more available and several cater to the dog walkers such as Jackson Morrow Park where the poop bags are always available and Foster and Highland Parks where you don’t have to worry about traffic but can simply enjoy being on a walk with your dog. All of these parks require you to have your dog leashed which is nice because it you shouldn’t have to worry about negative dog to dog interactions. The Industrial and Heritage Trials are also great places to walk your dog and I know mine love this walk. We usually do a round trip from Foster Park to the Humane Society or vice versa.  Another potential field trip are the three local parks. Mehlig Dog Park is at 1701 W Carter St, a smaller dog park is at 2302 Saratoga Ave on the east side of town, and the third is the Kokomo Downtown Dog Park which is next to Foxes Trail and 306 Riverfront Apartments. Dog parks can be great fun for you and the dogs as long as everyone who brings their dogs follows the rules.

Even though the blog is about Dog Parks we still need to include the cats. Today’s adoptable pet is Candace Jane a eight month old Grey/black Tabby cat. She is a beautiful cat and super friendly, sweet and can’t wait to get into a home of her own. Her adoption fee is $30 and she already spayed, vaccinated and ready to go!
