Speeding/Intoxicated Driver Arrested For Reckless Driving on Slick Roads
Lafayette (Tippecanoe County) – Indiana State Police at the Lafayette Post had more than just crashes and slick roads to contend with this morning. Several motorists called police dispatch centers in the Lafayette area at approximately 10:45 AM this morning, reporting a speeding vehicle traveling south on I-65 near the White/Tippecanoe county line. The vehicle was reported to be traveling over 100 miles per hour on roads that were causing many to crash or slide off the road.
The vehicle was described as a newer, white, Dodge Charger. Trooper Bill Brooks used his RADAR to track the vehicle on I-65 at over 100 miles per hour but was unable to cross over because of the snow covered median. Sergeant Dan Ziegler and Trooper Chris Hager were able to stop the vehicle near State Road 26 on I-65. As they questioned the driver, it became apparent that the subject was possibly intoxicated. The suspect, identified as Andrew R. Smith Jr., Indianapolis, IN, was transported to the Tippecanoe County Jail.
Smith was charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, and Open Container violation and other infractions. The information will be presented to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor for review.
Lieutenant Jay Janke, Commander of the Lafayette Post, stated, “This kind of situation has the potential to end badly even on roads that are clear and dry. Going this fast and being in an intoxicated state on roads that have slick and hazardous conditions is unacceptable. I am pleased with the work our troopers did today by taking this driver off the road.” Janke added that, “Preventing crashes and removing intoxicated drivers from the road is our mission. This situation accomplished both because of the efforts of the officer’s involved.”
