Two Injured in Collision
Kokomo, IN - Nov. 25, 2009) Two men suffered minor injuries after their vehicle collided with a utility pole early this morning.
Travis R. Smith, 21, of the 3300 block of S. Dixon Road, and Stewart A. Matlock, 21, of the 4600 block of W. CR 100 North, were transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital for treatment. Smith complained of back and shoulder pain. Matlock suffered a possible concussion and complained of back pain.
Howard County Sheriff Deputies reported that Smith was driving southbound on CR 750 West just north of State Road 22 shortly after 5:00 a.m. when a deer entered the roadway. Smith swerved to miss the animal, and lost control of his vehicle. His Saturn four door collided with a utility pole, shearing it in two. The vehicle rolled over after impact, coming to rest on its roof.
“Use of seatbelts by both occupants prevented serious injuries,” said Deputy Justin Markley. The vehicle was listed as a total loss.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by paramedics from St. Joseph Hospital, as well as firefighters and rescue personnel from the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. Howard County Emergency Management officers stood by while crews from Duke Energy replaced the utility pole.
